Some of you might be familiar with Congressman Jack Kingston of Georgia's 1st District. This district comprises the southeast corner of Georgia -- from the south end of Savannah to the Florida border -- and includes a large military constituency at Fort Stewart. (Kingston is filthy with Abramoff money and in the pocket of agribusiness, but I digress...)
For the first time, this year Kingston has a Democratic opponent, a Methodist minister named Jim Nelson. Few people give Nelson much of a chance of unseating Kingston, but even if he doesn't win, a strong showing could make a significant change in the politics of the district.

(By the way, I'm not aligned with the Nelson campaign in any way. I just live in the district and would love to see Kingston go down.)

Every one of us who lives in a House district represented by a Democrat ought to contact our Representative and either thank him/her for signing the Conyers Letter or express disappointment that he/she did not. (Heck, even if your rep is a semi-reasonable Republican who
might listen, sound off to him too.)

Project for the New American Century, in spite of the fact that it's been mentioned, as far as I know, no more than once or twice in the SCLM. For those who are not aware of PNAC, it's a neocon "think tank" formed in 1997, and it includes as members such luminaries as Dick Cheney, Bill Kristol, Jeb Bush, Paul Wolfowitz, Donald Rumsfeld, I. Lewis "Scooter "Libby, William Bennett, Norman Podhoretz, and Stephen Rosen among others --- including John R. Bolton.

Georgia Governor to my mother: You can't vote.

My mother is 90 years old and under hospice care, so it's a moot point, but still. Under a new law signed into law by Governor Sonny Perdue on Friday, Georgia voters must present one of the following forms of picture ID in order to vote:
- Driver's license
- Passport
- State-issued photo ID (includes public school and public university IDs)
- Military photo ID
- Tribal photo ID
My mother, believe it or not, has never had a driver's license or a passport. If she has any form of photo ID, I'm not aware of it. She has always lived in a very small town where poll workers knew who she was. Now, assuming she were physically and mentally able to vote, she would have to get some sort of state-issued photo ID. This is simply absurd.

Bob Somerby continues to do highly commendable work at
the Daily Howler. He stands alone, as far as I can tell, in his relentless criticism not only of Russert, Matthews, and their ilk, but also of cowardly, ill-prepared, milquetoast liberal spokespeople, whose names I'll leave it for you to discover.
Sure, Somerby's style may seem repetitive and vicious at times, but his analytic skills are tremendous, and he consistently provides the web's best commentary on the SCLM.

How to change CNN

I apologize for the brevity of this diary, but I think this simple idea is important enough to warrant some discussion.
I've heard numerous calls for boycotts against CNN (and other elements of the SCLM). Boycotts may make us feel better about ourselves, but, frankly, no one else is going to give a shit.
Think about it: CNN is part of Time-Warner, Inc., which is a publicly owned corporation. Time-Warner's one and only obligation is to make money for its shareholders. Consequently, management is (theoretically) obliged to listen to what its shareholders have to say.
The Idiotic Lumping of Rather, Jordan, Gannon

I'm really, really sick of the way the corporate media is lumping together the cases of Dan Rather, Eason Jordan, and Jeff Gannon/Guckert. It's yet another example of fake "balance" for the sake of appearing "unbiased."
Let's recap:
Dan Rather. Tarred and feathered for exercising bad judgement after a long, respectable career. (Not to mention the high likelihood that he was set up.)
Eason Jordan. Tarred and feathered for one ill-advised, politically-incorrect statement after a long, respectable career.
Jeff Gannon/Guckert. Exposed as a complete fraud with a sordid (and criminal) past. Possibly connected with people in the Whitehouse; possibly has information about or was involved in the outing of Valerie Plame.
Now tell me: Which of these doesn't fit the pattern?
